“Keep Going,” written by an anonymous teenager, depicts the struggle and motivation of an individual who gets dragged down by all possible factors, but continues to drive forward. In “Keep Going,” the writer uses diction and multiple accounts of personification to portray that belief and perseverance overcome obstacles.
The author uses diction to show the agony and hardships that the character has faced. He writes, “Despair loomed around me, My will grew small / I trudged through the darkness” (“Keep Going” 20-21). The author uses “loomed” to show the power of the darkness that consumed the narrator. Furthermore, the darkness was strong; however, the author uses “trudged” to depict the perseverance of the narrator and the motivation that he has to push forward to achieve greatness. So even in areas where darkness loomed around the narrator, he continued through the blackest of times to aim for improvement. The personification that the author demonstrates in this excerpt shows the capability of the earth against the main character. For instance, the word “dragged” shows how the earth deteriorated the main character, but his belief and will to move forward made him persevere to the end of the journey. Specifically, the narrator was dragged down by the elements, but he pushed against his distractions and continued to improve. In this point in the story, the idea comes across that success is hard to earn, but belief and perseverance always make it to the end.
