Scott Kaufman’s article “Dreams of Glory”, published in Psychology Today, analyzes how daydreaming affects mental health. By exploring the capacities of his imagination, Kaufman was able to escape the tiring realities of everyday life at a young age. Many people, including myself, use daydreaming to receive the same solution to daily problems. Studies have shown that a wandering mind can be useful in some situations, regardless of its negative significance throughout history. Daydreaming leads to a healthy and curious mind, a meaning and sense of purpose, a discovery of personal goals, and insight to futuristic possibilities. Psychologists, such as Kaufman, try to define, explain, predict, control, and improve the quality of behavior in order to ensure that people have healthy minds. The efficient use of mental fantasies (commonly known as positive construction daydreaming) is linked to many indicators of psychological health, including happiness, positive emotions, and high quality of life (Kaufman, pg. 2). Daydreaming is a natural and most times unconscious habit that cannot be prevented. I have witnessed many accounts of students who are scolded for simply having a wandering mind. We can discover more about ourselves just by setting ambitious targets. However, personal goals extend well beyond the immediate moment (pg. 4). Kaufman strongly supports the fact that students need time during school to let their minds wander. Effective daydreaming is done when our minds are idle and free to wander. I promote this idea as well, considering the fact that thinking about what to achieve in life is quite a stressful process.
