Pierson and Thomas (2002) define empowerment as ‘any process whereby those Lacking, comparatively, in power become or are helped to become more powerful’. At Adult Protective Services we work hard at encouraging empowerment within the micro, macro and mezzo setting. According to Rappoport (1987) “he described empowerment as individuals gaining mastery over issues of concern to them, as well as effecting changes in their community”. We work with elderly people, but we also service younger people with disabilities.
