A short story is much like a book in the sense that it has a theme and plot; the only difference is that a short story is shorter than a book and less detailed. John Updike’s short story, A&P, tells a story about an A&P cashier named Sammy who experiences something a little different at work than usually work day would bring. Three girls come in dressed differently than other girls come into the supermarket dressed. Although Sammy and his co-worker do not have a problem with this change in apparel, the manager, Lengel, does have an issue with the way they are dressed. The issue the manager has with the way these girls are dressed ends up in a conflict between Sammy and him. Sammy makes a mature decision, that had affected him and could have affected other people in his life, thinking that it was the right thing to do. Later on Sammy realizes he was wrong. By Sammy hearing what the girls had come into the A&P for, he got the sense that “Queenie” and her family were more on the wealthier side. Lengel went on in sort of a rude way talking to girls saying that “come in here with your shoulders covered”. Sammy, at that moment, had decided to stick up for the girls at that point. He made the decision to turn to Lengel and quit his job, hoping that the girls would hear so they would see him as a type of hero. Lengel told Sammy that he was making a big mistake, as if his job that was making him over a million dollars a year, he would regret it and his family would be very upset with him. Sammy continued to walk out the door to realize the girls could care less if he had just quit his job. They went on their way and did not acknowledge what Sammy had done for
