The Triumph of the Trimere is an acount of a the war between Persia and Greece. Persia was one of the largest empires in the ancient world. To expand eastward, Persia must defeat Greece. The armies of Greece were outnumbered better than two to one by the Persian army. I claim that the leadership of Themistocles was the only reason the Greeks defeated Persia at the battle of Salamis.

Unification was important yet difficult. Greece was divided into disputing city-states and feudal armies. The geography of Greece, with its islands and peninsulas, made naval power vital to supply and reinforce armies.

This was not an easy thing to do, to get people to pay for these, but Themistocles had the ability to persuade the people that they had to do this. The ships were important because invading Persian needed to establish naval superiority to supply its army, which had long supply lines and was vulnerable if naval resupply was not secure. The Persian King Xerxes knew that Persians supply lines would be cut off and the Persians would be forced to retreat if they lost naval superiority. At the same time, Themistocles knew the strength of the Persian army and he had to win at sea. Themistoles achieved this by luring the Persian navy into the narrow waters of Salamis. Themistocles tricked Xerxes into doing battle in narrow waters. There the Greeks crushed the Persian navy. With the Persian’s navy mortally weakened, they could no longer supply the soldiers. Therefore the Persians had to retreat, and the Greeks had won the battle and the
