In the novel The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, the theme of overcoming adversity can be seen in many different ways. As for the main character, Liesel Meminger, one of her many struggles growing up in Nazi Germany is learning how to read. She tries her best to learn because she is proficient at it and she doesn't like being an outcast, “She was cast down with the younger kids who were only just learning the alphabet, she felt gigantic among the midget children”(39).
