In the novel The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, the theme of overcoming adversity can be seen in many different ways. As for the main character, Liesel Meminger, one of her many struggles growing up in Nazi Germany is learning how to read. She tries her best to learn because she is proficient at it and she doesn't like being an outcast, “She was cast down with the younger kids who were only just learning the alphabet, she felt gigantic among the midget children”(39). She often felt mortified so she asked for help from her father, Hans Hubermann, who only had a fourth grade education himself and she eventually she had learned how to read with her hard work and effort put into it, “Liesel slowly gathered confidence, and she picked up a stray textbook
