Contrary to Courtney’s argument, I would not cede adverse possession to Otis so easily for a number of reasons. First, Otis is claiming he has lived there openly and notoriously for over twenty years. Martin knows Otis from the town he was a deputy, so his residing there could not have been that notorious. Otis never indicated in all the years that he had known Martin that he was occupying his land. It also indicates that Otis had another residence since Martin knew him from his town he patrolled. In North Carolina, to acquire title to land by adverse possession, the claimant must show actual, open, hostile, exclusive, and continuous possession of the land claimed for the prescriptive period under known and visible lines and boundaries
