The meaning and understanding of the work is impacted by the setting of the story. The setting is a very important part of the short story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson. She creates suspense by beginning the story with an optimistic outlook; however, in reality the plot was more intense and disturbing. Which shows how the setting has a very important impact on how the audience understands the meaning of the story. For example the beginning paints the story to be an uplifting and positive location when Shirley says, “The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green.” Which shows the way the author describes the setting as an enjoyable
