The Federalist Papers were a series of 85 essays urging the citizens of the thirteen colonies to ratify the new United States Constitution. Of the 85 essays written seventy seven of those were published as a series in The Independent Journal, The New York Packet, and The Daily Advertiser. In the beginning, The Federalist Papers were just The Federalist (ConstitutionFacts.com). The essays appeared anonymously in New York newspapers in 1787 and 1788 (The Federalist Papers). “These articles --- were published in book form as The Federalist in 1788” (Federalist Papers). The writers of the essays were Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay. The writers wrote the document under a secret name, Publius.
