“The Faery Handbag” by Kelly Link is a story where events in the narrative are told out of the order in which they actually happened; however, due to the many echoes scattered throughout the text, it is easy to see what is going on. Conflict in the story comes mainly from circumstance, although there are several characters who have more of a role in the conflict of the story than others. Most of the story is set in an unnamed town presumably just outside of Boston in the modern day. Within the story, there are a lot of characters, although many of them are just mentioned by the narrator. If anyone in the story is the villain, it’s Jake. Jake has no real reason to leave everything behind and live inside the handbag, but he does anyway. However, there’s a good chance he was just curious: “he reached over the counter and took Zofia’s handbag right out of her hand. He closed it and then opened it again. I think he opened it the right way. I don’t think he ended up in the dark place. He said to me and Zofia. “I’ll be right back.” And then he wasn’t there anymore. It was just me and Zofia and the handbag, lying there on the counter where he had dropped it” (Link, 18). By saying he’d be right back, he probably didn’t realize how time flowed differently inside the handbag, so he isn’t exactly a villain, similar to the librarian. If there isn’t one specific villain, then all the characters are in some way villains themselves.
