In the story “Just Lather, That’s all”, suspense is built throughout the story. It is developed through the conflict, fear, and risk throughout the story. While giving Captain Torres a shave, the barber is constantly bickering with himself on whether or not he should kill the Captain. “And how easy it would be to kill him. And he deserves it. Does he? No! What the devil!” (Tellez). This character-to-self conflict makes the reader intrigued to know what the barber’s decision will be, either to slit the Captain’s throat and have his blood on his hands or to respect his position and let him leave peacefully.
