Music and War: The Effect of Music During the Vietnam War In this historiography, many of the works talked about the period of the Vietnam War years in the United States and each bring different components that share new knowledge about specific topics related to the subject of war period music. My research relates to this historiography because I am focusing on the music and singers during the years that the United States was involved in the Vietnam War. In addition, I will be discussing in my research how this music affected the mindset of the American people, as well as what was the purpose of those singers and musicians who either supported or opposed the war itself. These were folk and rock music. Folk came first and had existed during the fifties and early sixties. As Vietnam became the center of the media’s and the American public’s attention, as well as the death toll of American troops was rising, more people began to turn to more hard lined protest music. This hard lined form of music was none other than rock music, and it became very important for the protest movement in the United States. Both authors agree that “if the point of a protest song was to get an audience to dig it then propounding political sentiment in the mainstream charts would be one method of attack.” This was definitely reflected in “the Doors’ ‘Unknown Soldier’ and Creedance Clearwater Revival’s ‘Fortunate Son’. The Doors opt for lyrical allusion and direct sonic imagery sounds of marching and gunfire interrupt a series of pithy, and somewhat banal, verses mourning another statistic in a faraway conflict.Creedance Clearwater Revival’s ‘Fortunate Son,’ by contrast exposes the inherent qualities in American society-wealthy sons, born into the presidency, dodging taxes, avoiding conscription yet demanding the ultimate sacrifice of those less privaledged.” The authors concluded that even though rock did appeal to many youthful protesters ranging from teenagers to college students, folk was just as important in the opposition movement to the
