Christos Tsiolkas’ various representations of masculinity and violence in The Slap significantly disrupt the dominant discourse of masculinity, which enables men to be violent, tough, and powerful, but forbids them to be feminine or homosexual. The author represents masculinity as conflicted and this is evident through the behaviours of Hector, Gary, and particularly Richie. These characters challenge the discourse of masculinity by diversely defying socially constructed gender norms that Harry is habituated with. Language is a fabrication of the world, not just a depiction and the unequal distribution of agency between men and women in Tsiolkas’ use of language is evident, especially the ‘gendering’ of meaning.
