Professor Leila Estes Film Analysis – ENG2300 September 24, 2015 Significance of the chicken in City of God Fernando Meirelles’ and Kátia Lund’s City God centers around the life of Rocket, a young aspiring photographer from the slums of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rocket experiences the violent life of the favelas as he is caught in the middle of a war between two rivaling factions. Through the use of short, rapid shots the audience from the very beginning of the film understand the overwhelming situation in which Rocket finds himself in. Additionally, Meirelles’ and Lund’s use of symbols in the first five minutes of the film illustrates Rocket’s desperation to try to get away from the favelas in order to become a professional photographer,…show more content…
City of God’s begins with the sound and image of a knife being sharpened, and rapidly cuts to guitar being played, then there’s a quick interchange of scenes between the knife being sharpened and instruments being played, then we cut to a chicken and then to carrots being peeled and cut into pieces. In a matter of seconds, different shots are showed; no shot lasts longer than two whole seconds. The use of short shots in this case is meant to create tension as the audience is not fully aware of what is happening in the first few seconds of the film. The audience is not given a second to think about what they just saw before another shot is displayed. The use of a montage also helps establish this initial tension as the audience does not know why the knife is being sharpened? Why is there music? Are they sharpening the knife to kill someone or are they celebrating? The short shots and montage simply confuses and overwhelms the audience; perhaps the same way the chicken is uncertain what is going to happen to
