Personal Narrative: Total Knee Replacement

Have you ever been in a situation where you felt obligated to do something for someone? This is how I felt the day my step-grandma informed me that she soon would be getting a total knee replacement. When I was younger, she was my taxi driver to gymnastics, track and sometimes a friend’s house. Mema, the name everyone in my family had always called her, asked me if I would help her with just a few things, I said I would. Since she did so much for me, how could I say no? It couldn’t be that hard, right? So the day of her surgery arrived. I visited her that night to bring her some food and give her some company. I already knew she was going to be in a lot of pain, especially because of her age. The pain medicines made her sick and Mema was sick for the rest of the night. The food I brought was now pointless, but she still appreciated the thought. She asked me to send my work schedule so when she got out she knew when I could help out. I gave her my schedule and left, knowing that she needed to rest. Four days later she informed me that she made it home. The surgeon suggested that she get a hospital bed in her living room since her bed was on the second floor and stairs weren’t an option. How could this old woman make so filth when she couldn’t even get out of her hospital bed in the living room? “Would you do some laundry, get me some dinner, do the cat litter and clean the living room up?” said Mema. I nodded my head and threw the clothes into the washer, cleaned the litter, cleaned the living room and went and picked her up some dinner.
