The Operation Cyclone is the code for the US Central Intelligence Agency program to finance the Afghanistan Mujahideen prior to and during the Soviet war in Afghanistan. The Soviet Union began to invade Afghanistan on December 24,1979. The Operation Cyclone lasted from 1979 to 1989. It started during the year of 1979 when Soviet Union landed in Kabul (capital of Afghanistan). During that time the country was in conflict of Civil War between the government and Muslims rebels. The prime minister Hazifuallah Amin wanted to remove Muslim tradition and influence Afghanistan with western culture. Amin's idea were based on communist government. This outraged many majority Muslims because they have strict Islamic tradition. These Muslims began to create own group which is called Mujahideen ( it means holy war for Allah). Many of the leaders were arrested by Amin's police and many fled to Pakistan. These Muslims wanted to overthrow Amin. During this time the Soviet union was helping Amin. Amin was the one who invited Soviet Union to Kabul. Soviet Union viewed Mujahideen no else but terrorist. US has been already aiding the Mujahideen. President Carter signed aiding to Mujahideen 6 months before the invasion of Soviet Union. Under the influence of Dr. Zbigniew Brzezinski on July 3, 1979. He knew there would increasing chance that soviet Union would invade Afghanistan. In January 1980 there was widespread support from Congress and internationally. Until the end of the Soviet withdrawal US aided the mujahideen and it was about $2 billion. After the invasion President Carter signed a directive providing for the Mujahideen and there were lethal weapons, shipment of 0.303 Enfield rifles, weapons and pipelines on January 1980 that was delivered in Karachi.
