Depression is caused by neither nurture or nature alone. Historically, ideas have revolved around nurture, namely the environment, and upbringing of a person, and nature, the genetic makeup of an individual that is reflected in their personality and approach to life. It is possible to argue that nature plays a bigger part in this picture due the fact that almost everyone is faced with traumatic or stressful life events, but not everyone suffers from depression. This point is proven by Simsek (2013), where his investigation stated that the results of the investigation supported the "absolute truth model", where it measured the tendency of individuals to pursue "absolute self- knowledge", showing that "personal perceptions of language" led to "self concept clarity" that predicted self reflection and rumination, which in turn predicted depression. Another case study by Lavender and Watkins (2004) showed the impact of rumination and future thinking on depression, stating that rumination "exacerbates negative cognitive biases" in depression, it was also shown that, contrary to popular belief, rumination also increased positive self thinking, although the extent of its impact was much less significant to that of negative self thinking. Self rumination can be seen as the negative aspect of self reflection, that stems from poor self concept or self esteem.
