HU4640 Ethics Module 1 Analysis Title: Virtue Ethics Virtue is defined as the quality of moral excellence, righteousness, and responsibility a specific type of moral excellence or other exemplary quality considered meritorious; a worthy practice or ideal. It goes on to say that the cardinal or natural virtues are justice, prudence, fortitude, and temperance. Virtue ethics is currently one of three major approaches in normative ethics. Virtue Ethics can provide no guide to moral action because it does not try to offer us a set of tools for making moral judgments. It might tell us what good is, but it offers no rules that teach us how to go about solving a moral problem. Virtues within people vary based on how the individual was raised and what religion the individual might follow.…show more content…
Aristotle’s theory is that virtue is the mean between two extremes, both of which are vices. Moral virtue is then defined by Aristotle as a disposition of ones right to choose by rule. Confucius says that virtue is a kind of power that accrued to be resided within ones being so that that individual will have acted favorably toward the spirit of another person. Benjamin Franklin’s theory has thirteen things that he says make up ones virtue. The first is temperance; next is silence, order, resolution, frugality, industry, sincerity, justice, moderation, cleanliness, tranquility, chastity, and finally humility. All believe that these things that they discuss make up a person’s virtue and how they will act when they come in to contact with another person in this world. It gives them the knowledge of right and wrong and how to behave toward one another. Most virtue ethics theories take their inspiration from Aristotle who declared that a virtuous person is someone who has ideal character traits. These traits derive from natural internal tendencies, but need to be nurtured; however, once established, they will become
