The protagonist in In the Next Room is Catherine Mrs. Givings. Catherine is the wife to Mr. Givings. She was faced with two major problems which was her husband not having time for her and her not able to feed her baby. Catherine had a baby girl whose name is Letitia. Catherine was unable to breast feed her child because she had insufficient milk to give to the baby. Because she couldn’t feed her baby it made her cry and feel bad. So she and her husband started looking for a wet nurse but Catherine was having a double mind about it. They finally got a wet nurse by the name Elizabeth. When Elizabeth carried the baby to feed her, Catherine started cry for the fact that the baby didn’t hesitate to feed from another woman who wasn’t her mother. This act made Catherine unhappy and lonely so any opportunity she gets to spend with her husband’s patients she utilized it. A day came when Catherine wanted to know why the husband was so occupied in the next room and Mrs. Daldry was moaning in the next room. That day, the husband left the house to see the new invention. Catherine was alone in the house then Mrs. Daldry came to the house to get her gloves. So Catherine took the opportunity to ask Mrs. Daldry what kind of treatment the husband gives her that makes her look bright and vibrant when she comes out from the next room. When Mrs. Daldry told her Catherine was curious to go try it on herself. She got into the next room and she tried it but she didn’t feel any of the things Mrs. Daldry told her about. So a new patient came along and this time it was a man by the name Leo. Leo is an artist, and on his first encounter with Catherine he told her a lot of things.
