Darkseid: Conqueror or Savior Comic Books and their history have come to the forefront in Popular Culture. As the grandest motion pictures every year for the last several years have all been based on characters with histories based in Comic Books or Graphic Novels, the artistic value and cultural significance of these characters have become increasingly imperative. While past characters have had set moral compasses, the modern incarnation of these characters have the lines blurred between good and evil. With a twisted moral compass, Darkseid, a despotic ruler along the lines of Sadaam Hussein and Adolph Hitler, is shown as a villain in the DC Universe, but his principles are actually closer to Batman than the Riddler. According to Comic Vine, Darkseid is the creation of Jack Kirby. Darkseid was created by Kirby during the silver age of comics. While there are different accountings of the origin of Darkseid, in the original version, the rise of Darkseid is the result of matricide and his betrayal of his brother. Yuga Khan, the father of Uxas and ruler of Apokolips, became trapped in the Source Wall leaving the throne of Apokolips unclaimed. He is benevolent is that he only wishes to bring order to the universe. The only way he can do that is by controlling everything and every being. On his home planet, his power is unsurpassed. The Justice League sees him as a tyrant. He sees himself as a savior. His lack of personal connections and worship by all around him inspires his feelings of divinity. He rules by fear, but has never known of any other way. When he sees the weakness that is present on Earth, he feels no pity. Instead, he feels he is doing his victims a favor by ending what he sees as pathetic lives. Those who survive his conquest will be honored to serve
