Being a clinician is a way of life: a life that puts the needs of others before yourself; one which stretches an individual professionally and personally; a dynamic life; a life which brings an individual face to face with the realities of this world, bringing them to the forefront of understanding and using that to guide their judgements. This is the sort of life I want to lead. Being able to apply the knowledge and skills that I have acquired and then seeing its effect, especially with regards to the wellbeing of others, is something that I find joy in. This is why I want to read Medicine. I have graduated with a Bachelors degree in Medical Sciences. The aspects of the course that I found particularly interesting were; Anatomy, physiology and micro-pathology. Anatomy and physiology, because of the relationship between structure and function, and also the fact that there is, I think, a purpose to design. With micro-pathology, learning about how bacteria and viruses interact with our bodies and travel, especially during the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, was insightful. Music is something that I and a lot of people enjoy; if it could induce a state of healing I wanted to know how and the credibility of it doing so. This involved me having to critically analyse research papers and comparing results found. After, I discovered the ability of music therapy to reverse dementia and a potential to increase healing rates. Imagine the relief to families and an increase in hospital bed availability. However, I came to the conclusion that more randomised controlled trials were needed for the therapy to be taken seriously.
