As a young girl, Ceres never had any rules. She always ran around and did what she pleased. Keep in mind, Ceres did have a mother, who did care about her. The only problem was that her mother always worked and never had time for Ceres. When her mother did have time for her, Ceres was never her main point of focus. Due to all of Ceres freedom, she became quite vain. Always making sure she was looking suave. Hair always puffed, lips always glossy. One day, after Ceres mother returned from work, Ceres was sitting at the table awaiting her mother’s complaints and concerns about anything and everything. Her mother rushed through the door and sat down across from Ceres.
“Ceres darling! We haven’t any food.” Mother said. “We shall go to the market…show more content… Your hair can wait!”
Ceres didn’t listen because she thought that her mother didn’t care about her in general, so she felt confused.
“Why does she all of a sudden care about me?” Ceres thought. “It’s just because she could be in danger. She’s just looking out for herself, not me.”
Their estimated time arrival to the market was around five minutes. Ceres listened to her mother ramble for the past ten minutes about the importance of focusing on the road and bragging about her new love interest. Ceres thought that her obsession with herself was due to consistent anxiety. She didn’t want to end up like her mother. Always working, having no love interest, and trying to raise a child who was pretty sure her mother only talks to her because she has to, not because she wants to. Ceres again took out her mirror and lip gloss. She found herself often reapplying gloss throughout the day, a nervous habit if you will.
Out of the blue, three minutes away from the market, whilst Ceres was reapplying her gloss, she heard her mother gasp and following, a loud bang. She had realized that she collided, head on, with a white van. Panicking, she turned her head to the right to see her mother, in the passenger’s seat, lying breathless and bloody. Pulseless. “Everything is shattering and it’s my mistake,” Ceres…show more content… Ceres grew to be such a protective mother because she never felt like she had a mother and she was responsible for the death of her mother. Sure, she had one physically, but not emotionally. Ceres was so reluctant upon letting Proserpina go to the seaside because Ceres herself, was once a curious young girl who wanted to explore. Ceres didn’t want to lose Proserpina like she lost her mother. She didn’t want to give her blessing because if something happens to Proserpina, she doesn’t want to be responsible for killing another loved one. She loves her daughter and she craves the mother/daughter bond that she never had. Ceres was so upset and distressed when she couldn’t find Proserpina, because she didn’t get a chance to tell Proserpina before she went missing that she loved her. This traces back to what happened with Ceres mother. Ceres never got to tell her mother that she actually loved her before the accident. Ceres has lived with the guilt of her mother for all of these years. As for Ceres tending to the harvest of wheat, corn, rye, and barley, she does this because they were going to the market to pick up some food. For some odd reason, the guilt overtook her and she felt that this job was her punishment for the damage she had done to her
