“A Plate Of Peas” by Rick Beyer is a personal narrative by Rick Beyer about his experience as a young boy with peas. The story is set in Providence, RI at what is presumed to be an outdoor strip mall. The narrator, however, does not like peas, but his grandmother offers him $5 to eat all of them. He accepts this offer, slowly chokes down the peas, and earns the money from his grandmother. While all this is happening, the mother is sitting there with a disgusted look on her face. Months later, at the dinner table the narrator is sitting in front of his favorite foods, meatloaf and mashed potatoes.
