Gun Control on College Campus The issue of gun control in the United States is becoming a very debatable topic especially with the increasing incidences of school shootings around the country. More and more families are being affected by the tragic shootings, and there are solutions that can take place on campuses to better protect the students and faculty. One solution would be to allow students to conceal carry a firearm on campus. This could allow the crimes to be ceased before they occur and save the lives of the students and faculty that are in harm’s way. In 23 states however, the decision to carry lies with the college campus (NCLS.org). Gun control on college campus would make for a safer environment for everyone around and to not endanger more people than necessary. It would prove to be a very strong preventative measure in crime. When a situation occurs on a college campus, an individual who is carrying a weapon can intervene and save the lives of several. The question that comes to mind is how many of the victims of college shootings could have been saved if someone were carrying a weapon when the shootings occurred. That person could have stopped the shooting and saved the lives of several students and faculty. Louisiana State Representative Ernest Wooden was quoted saying that “I see it as a right of the Second Amendment of the U.S Constitution.” The Second Amendment which is the right to bear arms and in the case of Moore v. Madigan stated that the Second Amendment must be interpreted to have the right to have a concealed gun in public, and to have it ready to use, and to have it for self-defense. Collin Goddard, a survivor of the Virginia tech shootings that occurred in 2007 disagrees with carrying weapons on campus. Utah is the only state that considers public colleges and universities as public entities and thus it does not have the authority to ban concealed carry (NCSL, 2015). Having the right education and the proper training is one of the attributes that allow for the safety of the people who conceal carry. Those who are anti conceal carry suggest that it is unsafe for someone to carry a weapon who is not properly trained in using it and can act under pressure situations (Grieve & Suing, 2015). They say that those situations should be left to the professionals such as the police. However in the classes that are required to take to obtain a conceal carry license go in depth in situations in which it would be appropriate to intervene.
