Small held a Master of Divinity degree; was a leader in the protest against womens exclusion from the Roman Catholic priesthood; was the New York coordinator of Pax Christi, a Roman Catholic pacifist organization; and was a principal in the Womens Liturgy Group, in which women were worshipping together and celebrating a liturgy reserved to men. She also was active in community organizing and prayer counseling.
