QUOTATION:The final conflict will be between the Communists and the ex-Communists.
ATTRIBUTION:Ignazio Silone (1900–1978), Italian novelist, journalist. quoted in Max Lerner, “The Hero as Ex-Communist,” pt. 4, The Unfinished Country (1959).

Said to Communist leader Palmiro Togliatti. One of the founding members of the Italian Communist Party, Silone left it in 1930, though he continued to align himself with the Left. In 1968, in a symposium with Arthur Koestler, he called himself “a socialist without a party, a Christian without a church.”
