NUMBER:18639
QUOTATION:Maybe I was young and “cute” (after all, I was only twenty then), but I’ve learned over the years that when you put white lab coats on chemists, they all look alike!
ATTRIBUTION:Gertrude Elion (b. 1918), U.S. scientist. As quoted in Feminine Ingenuity, ch. 15, by Anne L. MacDonald (1992).

Said on July 6, 1989. She was recalling that she was once denied a laboratory job, ostensibly because her physical attractiveness would distract her male coworkers.
