Charlie Chaplin (1889–1977), British actor, screenwriter, director. A Worker (Charles Chaplin), Modern Times, opening words of the nonsense song Chaplin’s nameless character improvises when he’s forced to perform as a singing waiter (1936).
Coming toward the end of the film, these are the first words ever uttered on-screen by Chaplin. In a way, this is a sadly ironic moment, for when Chaplin’s tramp character finally made his voice heard, it truly meant the end of the silent movies.
