Kloster-Zeven, Convention of

(klôs´tr-ts´fn) (KEY) , 1757. Early in the Seven Years War the English army, under the command of the duke of Cumberland, son of George II, was defeated by the French at Hastenbeck. Cumberland capitulated at the former Benedictine abbey near Zeven (a small town, formerly in Hanover, NE of Bremen) and allowed the French to occupy Hanover. The convention was disavowed by the English government, and Cumberland was relieved of his military position.
